Labour Councillor Julia Buckley highlights the failed ideology of austerity

Labour Councillor Julia Buckley highlights the failed ideology of austerity and points out how the Conservative led Shropshire Council continue to kowtow to Conservative Central Government on the issue of massive local Council budget cuts.

Services are creaking, the residents of Shropshire are suffering the consequences. Meanwhile, Conservative councillors appear to want to protect their allowances - see this article from the leader of the Labour Group at Shropshire Council Alan Moseley - Shrewsbury Labour

Dear Sirs,

Last week's headline "Council giving us poor value" told how the Chief Executive of Shropshire Council received an ear-bashing for the Council tax hike of 5.99% coming our way, combined with devastating cuts to services to balance the books on a £20 Million deficit.

Unless Clive Wright enjoys a secret life as an elected representative, surely we should be directing our fury and anxiety at the Conservative government who have imposed these austerity cuts, and then, at the Conservative-led Council, who choose to defend the cuts and pass them on to ordinary people like you and I?

Our Bridgnorth representatives, Cllrs Christian Lea, Bill Parr, Les Winwood and Elliott Lynch all belong to the Conservative group on Shropshire Council, and have supported this budget for 2018-2019.

What exactly are they planning to cut over the next 12 months?
£1.6 Million pounds will be taken out of children's services, including nursery support, school transport, special needs budgets and youth services.
£110,000 will be cut from environmental maintenance services and a whopping £5 Million cuts to the highways maintenance budget (25% of the overall budget). For those of us who struggle on the rural roads full of dangerous pot-holes, this is not a welcome announcement.
£557,000 will be cut from public health programmes, such as the "stop smoking" service and "help2change" two preventative schemes that save the Council and NHS money further down the line.

What a short-sighted and dangerous budget, delivered by local Conservatives on behalf of national Conservatives.

What is clearly missing here, is a budget settlement that delivers vital services for local residents.
Yours sincerely,

Dr. Julia Buckley
Labour Councillor for Bridgnorth East
